Coal mining, the impacts: Sutherland Shire Environment Centre AGM 2022

24 September, 2022 , 11:45 pm 25 September, 2022 , 2:45 am AEST

We’re delighted to announce that Dr Ian Wright will be our guest speaker at this year’s Sutherland Shire Environment Centre AGM. It’ll also be good to meet in person this year!

Dr Wright is a lecturer at Western Sydney University, and a recognised expert in the field of freshwater ecology, water quality, water policy and the science and management of water pollution. He is one of the team who was allowed to visit Woronora Reservoir in 2019. He saw first hand the damage from the mining operation taking place there. More recently he’s investigated coal mine pollution in our Royal National Park.

Ian has a long-standing research interest in the impact of coal mining activities on streams and rivers. Another longstanding research program he has been involved with concerns coal mining in the Blue Mountains. After Ian’s talk there’ll be a screening of a 25min film Mining in the Blue Mountains.

Members of the general public are not generally aware of the extent to which coal mining has been allowed to damage pristine wilderness.  Yet for more than 40 years, the Canyon Colliery coal mine discharged poorly treated wastewater directly into the Wollangambe River, which flows through the heart of the Blue Mountains World Heritage area. What is shocking is that the pollution became worse after the mine closed.

The film screening will be followed by a Q&A.

All are welcome to attend.
