Sutherland Shire Environment Centre AGM 2020

Due to COVID-19 restrictions our 2020 AGM will be held via zoom. If you haven’t used zoom before, it’s pretty straightforward, and very easy to set up.

Our guest speaker this year is Su Morley, aka Steel City Sue, from Climate Action Newcastle.
We’re so pleased she’s agreed to speak at our AGM.
Newcastle is a famous coal town – exporting more coal than any other port in the world.
Last year Newcastle Council announced a 100% renewable energy target, becoming the first in NSW to do so, and has started with solar installations and purchase of electric vehicles to reduce fossil fuel-generated energy used for council-business.
Su has been involved in some brilliant community-led initiatives to support this transition away from coal, including persuading traditional Newcastle bowling clubs to save money by switching to solar.
In March, Sutherland Shire Councillors unanimously passed a motion for Council to go carbon neutral by 2030, and to encourage the local business community to adopt cleaner climate strategies. It’ll be great to hear about Su’s experience at Newcastle and consider how similar action by Sutherland Shire Environment Centre members might support the positive initiative of our local Council.

As part of our AGM general business we will also be announcing the winners of the 2020 RD Walshe Writing For the Environment Prize. There were two age categories – under 18, and 18-25. The topic: I am Earth. Over 80 people submitted an amazing array of eloquent and heartfelt stories.
We’d love to have members and visitors come to the meeting. It would also be great to have feedback about how we can further connect with our community. Even if you can’t make the meeting we would be grateful if you could let us know what you think via this short survey.
If you’re not currently a member of Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, we encourage you to join online. Membership is only $20 per year, $10 for concessions. We’d welcome your support. Your membership will allow us to increase our effectiveness, to advocate on behalf of the environment, and help us to work toward building a more sustainable future.
