The Victorian and ACT governments have already passed new laws to ban gas connections to new homes. Victoria has even taken a further step with gas hot water systems to be phased out of Victorian homes under new energy reforms by March 2027. See story HERE and new electrification and efficiency standards and regulations for Victorian buildings HERE.
It is disappointing that NSW state government has refused to follow Victoria and ACT’s lead in banning gas connections to new homes. That’s why it’s important that NSW councils take the leadership that the state government won’t.
ShireCAN has been working closely with 350.org, a movement working to build a world of clean, accessible and affordable renewable energy. The Electrify Your Council campaign, launched by 350.org, advocates for all-electric new buildings to reduce health problems, energy costs and climate emissions and encourages councils to adopt planning rules that require all-electric, gas-free new homes. There are a number of councils across NSW that are part of this growing, council-led movement. They are leveraging their powers over the planning system to create all-electric, gas-free new homes and businesses. Check HERE to see which Councils in NSW have joined the movement. Unfortunately, Sutherland Shire Council is not one of them.
Can you let our Council know that new buildings need to be All-Electric. ShireCAN and our community supporters want Council to know that this change is important and to act now, especially for equity, health, financial reasons and the Climate.
